How much money could one click of a computer key cost your company?With one keystroke this past July, a technician accidentally wiped out nine months of information from the Alaska Department of Revenue’s $38 billion oil fund records. Though the Department had been backing up their system nightly, they apparently hadn’t tested those backups; for when they needed them after this major error, they discovered the tapes were unreadable. The consequences? 300 cardboard boxes of information had to be scanned and entered again, quality control checks performed and records reconciled. The cost in time and manpower was significant.
